FIRE STARTS AT THE ABANDONED SITE OF THE ROYAL YORK HOTEL IN RYDE – Island Echo

Firefighters work to put out a fire that broke out at Hanover House on the site of the Royal York Hotel in Ryde this evening (Wednesday).

4 devices from Ryde, Sandown and Newport are on site in George Street, where smoke is billowing from a 1st floor window.

Teams equipped with breathing apparatus and equipped with reel jets fought the fire both outside and inside.

Hanover House is located next to the Royal York Hotel – a long-abandoned building that recently underwent renovations.

Echo of the Island reported on Monday that windows were smashed inside Hanover House with police at the scene, but no suspects were located.

George Street – between the Esplanade and Cross Street – has been closed to traffic and pedestrians. Southern Vectis buses are diverted accordingly.

UPDATE @ 7:30 PM – 4 sets of breathing apparatus and 2 hose reels were used in an effort to contain and extinguish the fire, with a nearby fire hydrant being operated.

The Newport Incident Command Unit is now also on the scene.

Police arrived at George Street due to the suspicious nature of the incident.

UPDATE @ 20:00 – The Newport aerial ladder platform is now also at the scene as firefighting efforts continue.

The cause remains unknown to date, but the first investigations are underway.
