Liverpool said it was only a matter of time before target moves were reported

Liverpool have been told it is only a matter of time before reported target Matheus Nunes leaves Sporting.

Former Reds defender Abel Xavier told the Portuguese channel Eleven that he thinks Nunes won’t stay in Portugal much longer.

It was reported that Liverpool tried to sign the midfielder last month, per Portuguese media Correio de Manha.

Xavier also said Nunes would be a perfect fit for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola describe him as “one of the best players in the world today” following City’s 5-0 win over Sporting in the last 16 of the Champions League last season.

Liverpool have announced that Nunes will leave Sporting

“I’m very close to the structure of Liverpool, actually,” he said.

“There’s a lot of talk about Portugal’s virtues and obviously Matheus Nunes is the subject of rumours.

“I think Sporting won’t be able to retain a player of that size because of his quality, which means he would fit any big English side.

“It is normal, given the quality of player, not only of Liverpool, but also of Manchester City, which could possibly lose some players in this position, that these two teams think of Matheus Nunes.

“His departure from Sporting is only a matter of time.”

The 23-year-old looks like one of the next players who could come from Portugal and make a splash in the Premier League.

Liverpool have signed Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez from the Portuguese top flight in successive windows, and Nunes could be up next next summer.

That said, Jude Bellingham appears to be the top prize, if he is the major player Borussia Dortmund choose to sell next summer.
