A plan to relocate an erosion-affected Coastwatch tower is in the hands of planners.

Winterton’s iconic tower was dismantled in March before collapsing into the sea, leaving a supply gap and making the stretch of coast more dangerous.

Now, the team behind the new move is keeping everything ready for Borough Council planners to give them the go-ahead and ensure the facility is up and running by the end of September.

Winterton Coastwatch controller Roger Rolph said the new site, just north of the car park and the fishermen’s huts, would still give them 180-degree views of the beach and sea.

“We are waiting to hear something positive,” he said.

“We’re hoping to use the top half of the two units that have been taken apart and put it on a trailer so it’s mobile if we get further erosion there as sea levels rise.

“There’s a lot to do. We have to find the right trailer and it doesn’t seem so easy – it’s a matter of cost and availability.

“A new one costs up to £8,000 so we have to find a good used one.

“We’re hoping it won’t be moved regularly. I’d like to think we can get it up and running by the end of September, but I’m not sure that can be achieved.”

During the service disruption, one swimmer, a woman in her 60s, died, adding to the urgency of the program.

Mr Rolph said that in the 17 years the unit was in place at its previous location, there had not been a single drowning – the extra eyes and ears helping to spot someone in trouble and give him help.

James Bensly, whose borough council ward includes Winterton, voiced his support.

Commenting on the plans, he said: “I cannot support this planning request enough.

“This vital emergency service and its team are needed in this village as soon as possible.

“The local community and parish council have done an incredible job in this area and I fully support this bid here in Winterton.”

New signage is also planned for the coast warning of dangers.
